Citizens of Ansted, Jodie, and Gauley Bridge West Virginia need to take notice. Our water and our mountain is being destroyed by Powellton Coal Company with it's strip mining practices on Gauley Mountain. This mountain contains a large amount of selenium, mercury and other toxic metals. This company has endangered Rich Creek which flows into Gauley River. The DEP has repeatedly let them get by with this.
Also according to local residents and men who have worked in the mines in this area there are twelve tunnels and three abandon deep mines that are full of water. If there is a breach in the mines or the tunnels, the water flow could take out the areas of Ansed, Gauley Bridge, and Jodie depending on which way the water flows. At least two of the tunnels, if broken, would take out the Head Start Building in Ansted.
There is a DEP appeal hearing in Charleston on February 13, 2008 at 8:30 A.M. to stop this from happening. Please plan to attend.
Also February 28, 2008 there will be a premier showing of the film 'Rise Up! West Virginia"
Another Blessing of the Mountain will take place in April. Time and date will be anounced later.
